On a rusted steel plate, “Doriane” challenges the way we view women’s aging and the notion of an “expiration date” that is implicitly imposed on them. In daylight, the date “JAN 13, 2026” is inscribed on the work as a simple temporal marker; but under black light, the words “BEST BEFORE” appear in front of it, suddenly transforming this date into a best-by date. By subverting the conventions of perishable-goods labeling in this way, the work ironically questions how society can view the female body as a product whose value, too, has an expiration date.
