You have chosen to commission a painting from an artist (maybe from my own shop?). First of all, congratulations! But how can you be sure to choose the right painting, and that your choices will look good in your home? Here are 3 tips:
1. Select the format
The format will depend mainly on the space available on your wall. Remember that a large canvas will only look good if it breathes and is highlighted by the space around it. A smaller, less expensive canvas can also look great above furniture such as a chest of drawers, sideboard or sofa. You should also choose the orientation (square / portrait / landscape) according to the space available on the wall: if only the upper part is empty, a landscape or square format is preferable, whereas if you are lucky enough to have an entire wall section or a very high ceiling, you can afford a vertical format (portrait).
2. Choose the colours
The colours should be in harmony with those of your decoration. Do not choose more than 3 different colours, otherwise your canvas will look like a failed Christmas tree. You can choose to recall the colour of a wall or an armchair, or to contrast with the opposite colour. But choosing the same colour as your entire room or wallpaper is not recommended, as the painting may literally melt into the decor… So think about choosing a colour that will contrast with the wall where it will be hung.
3. Pay attention to the style
Remember to choose the right painting subject according to the type of interior decoration of your home. While it’s easy to integrate an abstract into a modern decor or to make it stand out from an old-fashioned living room, in a country chic decor, a colourful pop art illustration will probably not be of the best effect!
And above all, select the canvas according to your personal taste, because as the saying goes, all tastes are in nature!
